When I found this picture I had to smile. I was lucky to grow-up in a place where I had access to acres of forest. I know what forest bathing is. There were many ways to walk with my feet on the bare earth and sit in the company of trees growing up. While I’m a water baby by nature, getting in among the trees was always good medicine for my soul.
With pavement and rubber, we are collectively disconnected from our earth, it’s not just forest bathing we need, but taking the time to take off our shoes and wiggle our feet in the grass.
A form of grounding, the act of connecting in with the earth, is a necessity to human mental, physical and spiritual health. We are not meant to live so cut off from nature. Sitting with your back up against a tree, sharing its energy, one living thing to another, strolling through a forest feeling the presence of life that communicates without words is what is needed. This is the prescription for deeper medicine that your soul longs for.
The blueprint for this is found within you. We can connect with the earth through our energy system with visualization and intention. Sinking our awareness deep into the earth like roots of a tree, or creating a giant base for ourselves like the footings of a great mountain. Opening to the subtle communication within your body to the earth is always accessible. Keeping that connection going through intention links us to the bigger picture, something we lose when too physically focused.
As energy practitioners, we often use intention and visualization in our practices to keep us present and connected to all that is. Yoga practices can teach this too. But keeping that grounding going through our every day even when we are not practising can help too.
We haven’t been left alone here, dropped onto the planet as singular beings stumbling around with no support. But first we must be open to receiving it, tree bathing is a way of connecting in with this support without too much effort, the trees and nature take care of the nuance and the body gets to enjoy the benefits.
